Encapsulation, precursors and formulation strategies to enhance long-lasting fragrance performance
On the occasion of the latest edition of H3i – Home and Personal Care Ingredients Exhibition and Conference, held in Milan, Eurosyn S.p.A., an Italian distributor of specialty chemicals active since 1983, organized a TechFocus dedicated to one of the most relevant topics in the home care and personal care sector: fragrance longevity in consumer products.
The session featured Givaudan, which delivered the technical presentation “Multi-dimensional Perfume Long Lastingness in Consumer Products.”
During the TechFocus, Aurelio Quarenghi, Fragrance Innovation Director at Givaudan, illustrated some of the key variables influencing both the perception and the duration of fragrance over time in products for home and personal care applications.
Fragrance longevity represents one of the most important expectations for consumers. However, as highlighted during the presentation, the concept of a “long-lasting fragrance” results from a complex system in which multiple factors interact: from the physicochemical properties of fragrance molecules to product usage conditions, from the type of substrate to fragrance release mechanisms, as well as sensory perception across different stages of use.
During the presentation, several technological approaches developed by Givaudan to support fragrance longevity were discussed. These include:
· molecules designed to provide high diffusion and substantivity
· fragrance precursors capable of releasing odor-active compounds in response to environmental triggers such as oxygen, light, or humidity
· encapsulation systems designed to protect the fragrance and release it through mechanical actions such as friction or pressure
The combination of these technologies enables a more holistic approach across the different phases of product use, from application to post-use stages, contributing to maintaining a perception of freshness over time.
The presentation also highlighted how innovation strategies in the fragrance field are increasingly oriented towards combining sensory performance with sustainability, through ingredients developed according to green chemistry principles and formulation approaches that consider environmental impact.
The TechFocus represented an opportunity for technical exchange with industry professionals attending H3i, providing an overview of formulation strategies to enhance fragrance performance over time in home care and personal care products, while reinforcing the collaboration between Eurosyn and Givaudan in the development of innovative solutions for the market.
