- SPF 23675 in-vitro ‘Double Plate’ Method (ISO Committee Draft 23675)
The COLIPA/Cosmetics Europe in vitro sun protection methods group has been working on various approaches which involve the use of a UVR-transparent substrate, which acts as a skin analogue, and a UVR spectrophotometer to measure the amount of UVR transmitted. Considerable effort has been put into optimizing the UVR-transparent substrate, irradiation protocols/parameters, and automated spreading procedures to ensure accuracy. The development of a full in vitro method integrates the use of 2 complementary PPMA plate types to overpass the limitation of difference in affinity of one type of plate for specific sunscreen formulae, an automated spreading procedures mimicking the in vivo gesture and thus of the SPF assessment and UV exposure with same spectrum than in vivo ISO 24444 method, to take into account the photostability of the formulae. - Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy or HDRS (ISO Committee Draft 23698)
In-Vivo/In-Vitro Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy SPF – UVAPF according to ISO 23698 (under validation). A consortium of users and developers of sun protection factor (SPF) tests, managed by Cosmetics Europe (European trade association for the cosmetics and personal care industry), identify, characterise, and evaluate alternative sunscreen testing methods. The partnership, which was kicked off in July 2021, will test a set of 32 sunscreen samples covering a large spectrum of product types by using the current gold standard – ISO 24444 – and five alternative methods that include in-vitro, in-silico, and non-invasive in vivo testing in the next months. Moreover, the consortium brings together 29 partners in 10 countries, representing both personal care companies as well as laboratories developing alternative SPF tests. This new hybrid measurement principle combines spectroscopic in vivo and in vitro data. - UVAPF – CW according to ISO 24443
