Sustainable active ingredients produced by biotechnology

The great challenges facing us today are climate change, geopolitical crises, pandemics, supply chain problems, and reduced biodiversity. The cosmetic industry is adapting to these problems by assuming social responsibility, paying attention to fair trade, and reducing the carbon dioxide footprint. It also considers the need for organic, “green” ingredients and has the goal to be sustainable along the entire value chain. Modern, innovative biotechnologies can fuel the cosmetic industry and simultaneously become more environmentally friendly.

New multifunctional primary surfactant based on modified alkane sulfonate

Modern detergents require ingredients that enhance cleaning efficiency while considering skin equilibrium and reducing environmental impact.
Producers of detergents are seeking for raw materials with higher washing performance to reduce chemical usage, packaging, water consumption, and pollution. In detergents such as dishwashing liquids there is a need for high washing efficiency, foaming properties, viscosity, skin compatibility, low environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness.
Putting together all such requirements is the final goal of each formulator.
Manual dishwashing liquid detergents, are mainly based on ‘primary surfactants’ like LABS and SLES, along with secondary surfactants or co-surfactants. However, secondary surfactants can have conflicting effects on desired characteristics.
The aim of this article is to draw the attention to a new anionic primary multifunctional surfactant, that addresses multiple issues for formulators.

The need for robust testing methods for validating anti-allergen and allergen removal claims – Perspectives from an allergen testing company

‘Anti-allergen’ or ‘allergen removal’ claims on cleaning & consumer products are gaining in popularity amongst companies looking to expand their markets and amongst consumers, as demand for effective management strategies increase, driven by the rise in prevalence & awareness of allergies. Along with the proliferation in product allergen claims comes the potential for their use without suitable testing to validate them. This presents numerous issues to consumers, trying to wade through the complex world of allergen exposure reduction to find the best products for themselves or loved ones; and for companies who strive to validate the performance of their products. This article explores some of the key considerations and importance of robust testing methods for allergen claims.

How to sustain sustainable washing habits – How inflation and market dynamics have impacted laundry consumer behaviour in the last year and its effect on sustainable washing habits

By analysing two consecutive consumer surveys conducted in 2021 and 2022 across the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, the overarching question was addressed: Has inflation changed the way consumers wash? The result was very clear: Yes, consumers have reduced their average washing temperature by 1,9°C, changed wash programs and adjusted load sizes. Consumers also indicated that they perceived a drop in detergent performance, which was further validated in a technical stain removal test. Both the consumer survey and technical test results confirmed that consumers are facing new washing challenges due to inflation. While some of the wash behaviour changes are indeed more sustainable, for example cold wash, this also requires higher performance of detergents to maintain the wash experience and sustain those behaviours.
