Innospec’s BioSpec RA has been developed to deliver the drying and shine performance expected from conventional rinse aids, while offering a cleaner and more sustainable chemistry profile.
Rinse aids are not usually the most talked-about part of dishwashing, but they play an essential role. By helping water spread evenly and run off surfaces more easily, they reduce droplets, mineral spots and cloudy marks on glassware, while also supporting faster drying.
The challenge is not whether rinse aids work, but what many conventional rinse aids are made from. Traditional formulas often rely on petrochemical-based ingredients containing ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO). These materials can bring safety and sustainability concerns, including potential traces of 1,4-dioxane and limited biodegradability under low-oxygen conditions. As consumers, retailers and regulators continue to look for safer, lower-impact cleaning products, the rinse aid category is ready for a new approach.
Innospec addresses this need with a high-performance, naturally derived rinse aid that meets leading wetting and drying benchmarks while strengthening the formulation’s sustainability and safety profile.
What BioSpec RA Is
BioSpec RA is a 100% naturally derived, concentrated surfactant blend that combines anionic and nonionic surfactants. It is not necessarily intended to be used as a finished product on its own; instead, it gives formulators a flexible base that can be diluted, adjusted and enriched to create different final formulations.
Its chemistry is what makes the blend stand out. BioSpec RA is free from sulfated surfactants, which are a common potential source of 1,4-dioxane. It is also alkoxylate-free and it tests below the 1 ppm detection limit for 1,4-dioxane. Importantly, it is biodegradable under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. This helps address a known weakness of many conventional formulations.
For formulators, BioSpec RA offers more than a greener alternative: it delivers high performance together with an improved sustainability and safety profile.
The Performance Case
Wetting tests showed that BioSpec RA delivers effective performance at low use levels. On glass at 1% solids matched the wetting performance of a petrochemical rinse aid at ~14% solids. On polyethylene, performance was comparable to the petrochemical benchmark at 5–15% solids. Low filming was observed on glass across the test range.
For automatic dishwashing, BioSpec RA can be used as a 4x concentrate but it can also be a starting point to create customized rinse aid solutions. The same base can also be explored in main-wash detergents.
One Blend, Multiple Applications
The concentrated format is also an important sustainability benefit. With approximately 45% solids, BioSpec RA reduces the amount of water that needs to be transported, stored and packaged while still giving formulators flexibility to build different product formats. The blend responds to four important trends shaping the cleaning market: naturally derived ingredients, sustainability beyond sourcing, and multifunctional formulation solutions.
This versatility is central to the value of BioSpec RA. In addition to rinse aids, Innospec has evaluated the blend in several home care applications:
Acidic surface cleaners: When diluted and combined with citric acid to reach a pH of around 2, BioSpec RA removes soap scum from black bathroom tile within five minutes. Reducing the BioSpec RA dilution level does not reduce cleaning performance, suggesting good formulation efficiency.
Alkaline degreasers: by adding sodium hydroxide to reach pH 13, the blend removes palm oil from plastic and baked corn oil from stainless steel. Its performance is comparable with alkoxylates based efficient benchmark degreasers.
Streak-free all-purpose cleaners: In a high-fragrance formulation, BioSpec RA enhances surface wetting and supports a streak-free shine. On polished black granite, it delivers gloss and streak-free performance comparable to commercial benchmarks.
Laundry liquids: As a concentrated detergent base, BioSpec RA provides a 100% vegetable-derived option that is EO-free, sulfate-free and 1,4-dioxane-free. In testing, it outperforms a vegetable-based benchmark even at the low pH of 3.5, with cleaning performance improving as pH increases and a clear advantage observed on polycotton.
Why It Matters
For years, the cleaning industry has had to balance two expectations that are not always easy to combine. Consumers increasingly want products made with naturally derived, lower-impact ingredients and with greater transparency around what those ingredients are. At the same time, they are not willing to accept weaker cleaning. Many solutions designed to reduce environmental impact have still required some level of compromise.
BioSpec RA is designed to help overcome this compromise. The blend combines a 100% Renewable Carbon Index with broad formulation potential. It can support dishwashing, surface care and laundry applications, while reducing the associated hazard profile.
BioSpec RA is a rinse aid evolution. For an industry facing growing pressure from regulators, retailers and consumers, it offers a practical example of how platform chemistry can help deliver both performance and more sustainable formulation choices.
