iSTREEM – A “down-the-drain” environmental exposure model for the United States

The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) serves the growth and innovation of the U.S. cleaning products industry by advancing the health and quality of life of people and protecting our planet. With a continued effort in promoting public health and safety, its experts have developed iSTREEM®, an in-stream environmental exposure model, which predicts the concentration of a chemical used in “down-the-drain” products. It is a tool to promote product stewardship and regulatory compliance for chemical suppliers and manufacturers of formulated products of all sizes across commodity groups.

Addressing sustainability with waterless formats in Home Care products

The need for alternative sustainable approaches to meet both the European Green Deal and today’s society demands has been recognized by the home care industry, which has been challenged to respond with innovative eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Waterless formulations are a clear example of sustainable formats that cut back on single-use plastics and CO2 emissions due to transport savings. Being surfactants the key ingredients in the formulation of super-concentrated waterless formulations, extensive research has been made around the phase behaviour of highly concentrated surfactant systems and the mechanisms behind aggregation processes, to select the best surfactant components that enable not only to meet the formulative requirements of hard surface and hand dishwashing cleaning compositions (stability, appearance, viscosity, etc.) but also to provide the excellent performance consumers are looking for.

Developing an antiviral surface cleaner utilising unique surface adsorption properties of hydroxyproline-rich-proteins

The surface adsorption of hydrolysed collagen protein (NOVOTEC® CB800) and its interaction with a range of surfactants, which result in its ‘easy-to-clean effect’ has been utilised to produce a unique surface cleaner with residual biocidal activity for 24 hours. The protein combined with anionic, non-ionic and cationic surfactants is able to form a stable surface film on a range of surfaces including glass, polymethylmethacrylate (plexiglass) and stainless steel. In the absence of protein, the surfactant is rinsed off the surface. These stable surface films remain after drying the surface. With the addition of water, protein-surfactant mixtures rehydrate and reorganise to form an active surface film. The active film contains residual biocidal activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and SARS-CoV-2 after 24 hours. The presence of the hydroxyproline-rich-protein enhances the residual biocidal effect, especially in the presence of rinsing or abrasion, such as that occurring in high-use areas.

The little voice inside your company’s head is the consumer – Is there a real need for natural?

As we are seeing exponential growth in the natural ingredient industry, it is becoming apparent that the concept of “natural” is largely fueled by consumer perceptions. While companies strive to meet consumer wants and needs, including trendy natural ingredients alone may not provide enough incentive to drive consumers to purchase. Quality assurance, credibility, and trust are fundamental in building connections with consumers. Using the consumer as a guide can ensure and build a relationship based on authenticity and trust that can drive brand loyalty to outlast any super-ingredient fad.

PANEL DISCUSSION ON HEALTHY-AGEING

The Enigma of Ageing
‘Age is just a number’… ‘Age is how you feel’… ‘Behave and think younger’… So many statements like these are common today, and over the years our cosmetics industry has successfully taken advantage of people’s fears and anxiety when it comes to getting ‘old’. The process of ageing however, is a complicated one. While brands and product advertising focus on what we ‘see’, our health and how we ‘feel’ play very important roles, since ageing of the skin is also tied to ageing processes of our body in general. So, how do we see ageing skin today? What lessons have we learned from the past? What could the future hold? This commentary article discusses the perspectives of eleven panellists from providers to the cosmetic industry, and considers what challenges we still face, and opportunities for the future.

Source substitution formulating

Perhaps the most impactful change in the cosmetic and personal care market over the last forty years is the demand placed upon formulators to provide timely, market responsive, regulatory compliant and cost effective products. The time frames in which these parameters must be delivered continues to decrease. These factors have forced successful formulators to adapt in the processes used to get products developed.
Starting as new product line from scratch has become almost unheard of undertaking. Instead we have suggested using platforms for speeding up the process, making specific type of changes to demonstrate consumer driven performance enhancements.
This article will concentrate on a newer approach we have dubbed Source Substitution Formulation and it is different from and complementary to the Minimally Disruptive and Functional Formulation approaches we have recommended. Source Substitution Formulation is a process that is used primarily to substitute a more sustainable reactant for a less sustainable reactant. This could be replacing a petroleum based fatty alcohol with a naturally derived fatty alcohol or substituting a natural based ethylene oxide for petroleum ethylene oxide.

Humens – NabionTM, an effective sustainable builder for elimination of calcium and magnesium ions in automatic dishwashing and laundry powders formulations

NabionTM is an all-in-one and eco-friendly builder. It is a fully water-soluble mineral powder composed of white granules made from sodium carbonate and sodium silicate. We carried out a study to compare the capacity of sequestration of calcium and magnesium ions between sodium citrate, NabionTM 15 and NabionTM 26. We found that NabionTM is an efficient alternative to sodium citrate for sequestering calcium and magnesium ions.
