Researchers from Meijo University, Japan, in collaboration with Harima Chemicals Group, have developed an efficient method to isolate highly purified isomers of phytoene and phytofluene, two colorless carotenoids naturally found in fruits and vegetables.
The team investigated their structural properties, UV absorption, antioxidant potential, and skin-related biological effects, providing new insights into their functionality.
The findings highlight the potential of these lesser-known carotenoids as promising high-value ingredients for future cosmetic and skincare applications.
The study also underscores the importance of evaluating carotenoids at the individual isomer level, as different forms may exhibit distinct biological and physicochemical properties.
These insights could help researchers and manufacturers identify the most effective isomers for specific applications, supporting the development of innovative natural ingredients for the cosmetic, food, and healthcare sectors.
